The President of the New Ghana Social Justice Forum, Mr. Yahaya Alhassan, has chastised the practice, where lecturers and teachers ask student to donate any kind of money to a cause, as inappropriate.
Speaking in a press briefing in Accra, Mr. Alhassan asked: “Imagine the officer in charge of your exam, asks you to donate money? At that moment, you will become vulnerable; you’re put at disadvantaged; and you’ll have no choice. Even if you have no money, you’ll be forced to borrow money from somewhere to pay to the lecturer, because, you’re eager, or, you also expect the lecturer to pass you. On the other hand, when the lecturer receives the said money, he’s also trapped to pass you”.

He stressed that when such practices happen in our schools, it means, we are nurturing bad leadership, and which is unfortunate at the time that Ghana is facing leadership crisis.
“We are using this important medium to urge all University lecturers, colleges, and even teachers in the primary schools to desist from what I call; an ethical failure on the part of teachers, who ask students to pay money for a cause”.
According to a research by the NGSJ, One (1) in every three (3) students, have paid such monies, and it’s unfortunate, and against the future of corruption that we are advocating against.
However, Mr. Alhassan, used the platform to appeal to the government to improve the remuneration of lecturers and teachers in Ghana, so as to ensure efficiency in the work that they do, for a better Ghana, and a better generation.
On the other hand, Mr. Alhassan, disclosed that The NGSJF, will put an eagle eye to the National Service Scheme, to ensure that the children of the elites, or any Ghanaian, who is posted in the village, stays in the village to work for the community, than the joy of working in the capital, which to him, is the worst form of corruption.
“It is the worst form of corruption when a fellow Ghanaian is posted in a remote area, and the officers in charge change the posting for the person to work in the cities”, he emphasised.
The NGSJ was established to move from the old and current system of endemic corruption, and state capture by the political elites across the divide to a new system of government that promotes all aspects of good governance such as transparency and accountability, independent judiciary, media freedom, women empowerment, participation.
